UAV Navigation and Satlink have started to collaborate on the development of solutions that will provide robust communications via satellite links (SATCOMs) between drone operators and drones flying beyond visual line of sight operations (BVLOS).
According to a UAV Navigation press release:
“Thanks to SATCOMs, the operator may have information about the mission, execute actions, or even control the payload almost in real-time. Traditionally, SATCOM devices were characterized by their big size and weight and the high amount of power required to make them work, therefore, not all UAVs were ready to include this technology. However, the quick expansion of the UAV technology has made a difference where SATCOM manufacturers start producing a range of devices oriented to RPAS. Additionally, the use of this technology has been characterized by the high costs associated, for this reason, it was used by big companies and state security forces. However, the recent emergence of data plans with competitive prices has opened the use of this technology to other companies and projects. This, together with rational use of the bandwidth and algorithms of control of the amount of data when making use of these channels have made satellite communication a viable option for UAS.”
UAV Navigation’s flight control solutions are used by a variety of Tier 1 aerospace manufacturers in a wide range of UAV platforms and operations. These include high-performance tactical unmanned planes, aerial targets, mini-UAVs and helicopters. The company’s autopilots carry out advanced functions, such as controlling multiple target drones at 700 km/h, a fully automatic net landing of a drone onto a moving vessel at sea and converting a twin prop manned aircraft or turbine helicopter into a drone. Satlink has agreements with the main satellite networks, such as Inmarsat, Thuraya and Iridium, for L-band solutions, and also with the main satellite networks for Vsat, Hispasat among them, in Ku or Ka-band, which allow it to provide global coverage in voice and data transmission to any type of user, whether at sea, on land or on aircraft.
